A WALK IN THE PARK
London can seem hectic at times and we know how important it is to ensure you get some quiet time to yourself. For a built up city, London has a lot of parks and green spaces that are perfect for taking a moment to yourself to re-charge in the big city. A lot of these parks are also within walking distance from many London universities, making them the perfect spot to take a break between lectures.
Right in the heart of London, the capital's most famous park is host to a huge variety of activities. You can have a go at boating, tennis, brave an open water swim in the lake, or just join the locals enjoying the open air. Then on special occasions, you might stumble across Winter Wonderland Christmas market, British Summer Time festival or other world-class events that are held at the park throughout the year.
One of central London’s larger parks, Regents Park is primarily made up of open parkland, with several different facilities dotted around the 410 acres. These include public gardens, a lake with waterfowl and a boating area, and an Open Air Theatre. The north side of the park is home to London Zoo, so don’t be alarmed if you hear some strange animal noises when visiting that side of the park.
Home to many ceremonial parades and events of national celebration, St James’ Park is a royal treasure. Surrounded by landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, The Mall and Horse Guards Parade, St James’ Park covers an area of nearly 57 acres. The park provides habitats for a variety of different species including pelicans, foxes and ducks which can be seen nesting in and around the lake. This is the perfect place for a wildlife enthusiast or just somewhere to relax surrounded by nature.
London’s oldest enclosed Royal Park is set on the side of a hill overlooking the River Thames. Walk to the top of the hill and capture one of London’s best natural views of the city skyline. As part of Greenwich World Heritage Site, you’ll find the Prime Meridian here, (the reference line to Greenwich Mean Time), plus the Royal Observatory. Ideal for a chilled day with views and a little history, if you’re in the mood.
This vibrant hipster hangout is probably the coolest of London’s green spots. It’s home to a permanent ping pong table, a wildflower meadow in the spring and summer, and London Fields Lido, while Broadway Market is conveniently located nearby for posh picnic food.
Another very royal park, Kensington Gardens is the home of Kensington Palace, plus an array of memorials, statues and the Serpentine Gallery. Visit Queen Victoria’s birth place for a bit of culture surrounded by beautiful gardens and greenery.
Although this might not be within walking distance from most London uni's, this large park in South London is home to a collection of full size dinosaurs. Yes, you read that right – dinosaurs. The models were built by the Victorians and make a fun day out trying to spot them all lurking between the trees.
The park also has a maze, outdoor concert area, museum and national sports centre, so you won’t fall short of things to do, which makes it worth that little bit of extra travelling from central London.
Covering a whopping 2500 acres, Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve and just a stone’s throw from central London. Famous for its grasslands and herds of deer, you’ll forget you’re still in London and makes for the perfect day out.
