Coming to study in London and trying to decide which area of the capital to live in? Perhaps you’d prefer to get a break from the hustle and bustle by staying just outside the city centre but are worried about commuting times to your university campus? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Spotlight on Chapter Lewisham… this friendly Chapter is only 3 years old and is located south of the river in Zone 2 with excellent transport links into the city. It’s perfectly connected with direct trains to London Bridge in 9 minutes, making it an ideal base for students studying at a wide range of London colleges and universities in south and central London. Nearby universities include Goldsmiths (8 mins via bus), University of Greenwich (17 mins via DLR) and King’s College London (25 mins via train).

WHAT’S NEARBY?

Lewisham is a corner of London which is forever evolving and a newly popular up-and-coming place to live. It’s very close to creative New Cross, leafy Blackheath and the historic Royal Borough of Greenwich, all of which make fabulous days or nights out.

🎸 New Cross Inn – hosting live music 6 nights a week and a pub quiz on the 7th night, this place has many recurring events to keep you coming time and time again. Open mic nights, alternative line-ups and even famous bands are just a taster of what you can expect at this great venue.

🥡 Street Feast Model Market – each year, an abandoned 1950’s market is transformed into a lively street food fiesta. From sweet treats to fiery nibbles, there’s a wide range of cuisines to choose from and all are freshly made and completely individual, so it’s perfect if you fancy something a little more exciting than a sandwich for lunch.

🌳 Greenwich – home to the most historic of London’s Royal Parks, Greenwich is an idyllic corner of the capital with substance. As well as beautiful green open spaces, it’s also home to the Royal Observatory, National Maritime Museum, street food markets and the Old Royal Navy College.

🛍️ Lewisham Shopping – no need to travel into Oxford Street to go shopping when you have a collection of over 65 shops available on your doorstep. From boutique clothes shops and classic high street stores, to restaurants and food outlets, this shopping centre is a classic fixture for a London suburb.

Lewisham train station is less than a 5-minute walk from Chapter Lewisham, with overground trains running to major London stations including London Bridge, Waterloo East, Charing Cross and Cannon Street. Fast trains are available for you to be in the centre in under 15 minutes, and the majority of trains coming into the city from South East London will run through Lewisham, so you’ll never be waiting long for a train.

🚈 DLR (DOCKLANDS LIGHT RAILWAY)

TOP TIPS FOR TRAVELLING IN LONDON

  • Get yourself an 18+ Student Oyster Card to pay for your train, tube and bus journeys, and save yourself 30% on adult-rate travel cards. You can sign up for one before you arrive in London and set up auto top-up to make sure you’ve always got travel credit.

  • Download the City Mapper app to find out the best routes and real-time journey updates for getting around the capital. It’s always worth having a quick check before setting off for the day to avoid any unwanted hold ups.

  • If you have a little more time on your hands, getting the bus is a great way to get to know the city. The tube may be convenient, but you can miss out on many of the sights and hidden gems of London whilst making your journey underground.

  • Black cabs might be an iconic London fixture, but the taxis are actually a pretty expensive mode of transport. Try Uber for a slightly cheaper option, where you can split the cost with friends and share your journey with loved ones for extra security.
