Staying In London For Christmas
Published: 24 Dec 17
If you decide to stay in London this Christmas, there are plenty of things for you to do. Whether they’re festive activities or just some good old eating, drinking and shopping, we’ve listed some ideas that we think sound fun to do over the holidays.
London at Christmas is home to some world-famous Christmas lights. From the dazzling displays at Oxford Street, to the stunning decorations in Covent Garden, London is illuminated from head to toe this Christmas. Streets are transformed into winter wonderlands as they are blanketed with lights, bows, sparkles and the rest, inviting you to come down and celebrate the festive season. You haven’t seen London until you’ve seen it in lights!
Cinema in the Snow
Snow rarely makes an appearance in London, so Pop Up Screens are trying to bring the snow to you this Christmas at Hackney Showroom. Enter through their magic wardrobe to watch some of your favourite Christmas films in a cinema screen filled with snow, and its very own Christmas tree. With a bar serving festive hot chocolate, mulled wine and popcorn (obviously), Cinema in the Snow is a perfect activity to brighten up some of those cold winter nights.
Now this is something you can do both before and after Christmas. Hit London’s famous shopping parades to get the perfect Christmas gifts to send home, or if you prefer, a bit of window shopping with the famous festive window displays at some of London’s most iconic stores. On the other hand, if you’re looking to treat yourself or save a bit on money, wait until Christmas is over and hit the Boxing Day sales. Join the thousands of savvy Londoners from December 26th to grab the best bargains at giant retail outlets. Here’s a list of some of the best places to go shopping this winter:
• Oxford and Regent Street
• Carnaby Street
• Bond Street
Christmas at Hogwarts
Snow has fallen at Hogwarts this Christmas. From 18th November – 28th January, The Making of Harry Potter, Warner Bros Studio Tour are transforming the film series’ most iconic sets for festive scenes. A replica Christmas feast is laid out in the Great Hall, and special-effect fires roar in the Gryffindor common room. Get up close to props, costumes and models used in the Harry Potter films and see the Hogwarts castle covered in a specially made blanket of snow. This attraction is a popular one, so we suggest booking as soon as possible to make sure you get the see Hogwarts in the snow.
Food and Drink
What better food is there than Christmas food? We’re talking turkey roast dinners smothered in gravy, hot mince pies with custard or cream (there are two types of people), German food markets, and so much more! London is home to some great Christmas food and you should definitely make some reservations. Don’t forget about the drinks as well – festive flavoured hot chocolates with marshmallows, mulled wines and ciders, champagne and Christmas cocktails. Get together with your friends and huddle up around an open pub fireplace, or share a hot drink at a Christmas market and make sure you’re filling up on all of London’s festive treats this Christmas.
Christmas is the time to celebrate with loved ones, so ensure you make the most of it in London with your friends and peers if you’re not seeing family this year. It’s one of the most magical places to be at Christmas time, so keep yourself busy making memories that you can write home about – they will last forever!
